(Venice CA) C.A.V.E Gallery is pleased to present “Balancing Act” a two person exhibition featuring Amanda Marie and X-O – artists who have been companions on an ambitious journey traveling and working together over the years – and now for the first time, are joining forces in a unique exhibition that will showcase an impressive collection of works by each – and also include a “conversation piece” that the two artists made in tandem, where each artist made a creative contribution to a new large scale work.
C.A.V.E Gallery is honored to host our second exhibition with Amanda Marie.

Amanda Marie is among the most talented women working in the genre of “Stencil-ism”, and has masterfully developed an endearing yet bold, visual language. The artist has perceptively co-opted a homogenized and stereotyped depiction of an ideal Modern American childhood. The work challenges the representation of wholesome American innocence and touches on the realities of mischievous curiosity and alienation, which lie underneath the surface of the picture perfect American childhood. Executed in a simplified illustrative style reminiscent of the 1950s, and accented with subtle and imaginative layers, the characters seem to have been lifted from the pages of children’s books – yet the storybook imagery is laced with playful antics, mystery and allegory.

The exhibition will include a large collection of new works on paper, a special mural in the gallery, and a unique series of canvas pieces presented in a ‘flag’ fashion.

Hyland Mather – aka “‘X-O’s” – playful ‘lost object’ works are a fitting balance to Amanda Marie’s nostalgic works.
X-O has developed a creative, signature style of re-purposing ‘Lost Objects’ into wonderful assemblages. Along with showing original collage works on paper, X-O has stamped his playful wood, metal, and plastic, ‘collect and assemble’ works both inside and outside the gallery – transporting visitors into a visual melody in the gallery’s courtyard  -  creating a uniquely engaging and memorable experience for this special exhibition.
